When you're trying
to reach a summit, you never want to hear or even think the phrase "turn
back." However, there are times that such an action could save your
life. My personal motto is, "always live to hike another day." I believe
that my life is far greater than the desire to succeed by reaching
my climbing objective on every outing.
Summit bids are
no place to take undo risks. I have found mountains to be unforgiving
beings that you have to deal with on their own terms. Dangerous weather
and faltering companions have caused me to turn back from summit attempts
on several occasions.
A mountain summit
and a big ego are dangerous companions.
