So what are your
chances of making to the summit of Mount Shasta?
I think no greater
than 50% and most likely closer to 33%. The biggest reasons for failure
are: wind, storm, sickness, lack of personal fitness and fear. You
have some control over the last three but when it comes to the first
two, you are at the mercy of the mountain. The snow and weather variables
ensure that no two climbs on Shasta are the same, and that is what
makes it such a joy to return year after year.
I have reached the
summit of this mountain both from Horse Camp (Sierra Cabin) and Helen
Lake. Each of these summit starting places have their pros and cons
and my opinion as to which is better or worse changes from year to
year. Does the work of carrying your tent and all the related gear
to Helen Lake offset the extra distance of starting from Horse Camp
or even Bunny Flat? You will have to answer this question yourself.
As you climb Mount
Shasta year after year you will soon discover that you are not alone
in your passion for that mountain. Many have similar feelings.
