Taking rest steps
is useful when hiking on steep slopes. With a rest step you do not
stop, but you rest your trailing leg with every step. Being able to
hike using a rest step requires practice and some rhythm. As you step
forward with your leading leg you straighten and pause your trailing
leg to allow it to rest for a second. This rest step is repeated with
every step and it will allow you to hike much further without muscle
fatigue.
