Bears

Yosemite National Park

I always set up my camp to be ready for a possible bear visit. This means storing all the food in bear-proof containers, cooking away from my tent and unzipping all the pockets of my pack.

In Yosemite National Park you can always count on a bear visit if you camp in popular places. On one trip to Cathedral Lakes all my food would not fit in the bear container so I placed the extra in a double black plastic bag and hid it far from camp. As evening came I looked out of my tent to find a bear going through my pack but because all the pockets were open, no damage occurred.

The next morning all the hidden food was gone. I wonder if it is possible to hide food from an experienced bear. Without the bear container my trip would have been cut short because I would have lost all my food. And hiking on an empty stomach is not much fun, especially for my little girls.
