Now that random deviation
has been removed from the satellite GPS system in the United States,
GPS receivers are very accurate. Of course, you can buy some units
that are more accurate than others.
Before each hike,
I map out each of my hiking trips on my computer using mapping software
and then I download the route into my GPS for use on the hike. Using
a GPS adds interest to the hike and on a new trail it is nice to know
where you really are.
Many times I set
a trail intersection as one of the waypoints on the hiking route. While
on the hike as we approached the trail intersection, the GPS was accurate
within 50 feet of the actual intersection and on another hike it was
right on to within a couple of feet.
Can you imagine the
odds of downloading a wavepoint from a computer program in my home
and then with a GPS having the exact location identified on the trail?
