At Sonora
Pass you can access the Pacific Crest Trail and hike either North or
South. Hiking South takes you into the a barren part of the Emigrant
Wilderness that I refer to as the moon. Latopie Lake as seen below
adds a refreshing beauty to this stark landscape.
It was
this hike in 1991 that hooked me on hiking. Day hikes on the Pacific
Crest Trail leading either North or South from the Sonora pass parking
lot are spectacular. These hikes start at a high altitude and quickly
rise to the top of the mountains, therefore be prepared for a deep
breathing hike.
Spring
snow fields on the south route would be difficult to cross on the steep
slopes. Plan your gear accordingly.
